Eveline is a young lady of 19 (Meyer, 420) who has faced countless challenges in her life. In this short story she faces one of her most difficult choices that has the power to completely change her life. Eveline had the chance to leave her home and start a new life with Frank, someone she really loves.

In “Eveline,” James Joyce uses the juxtaposition of the ever-changing setting and the unchanging stoic character of Eveline in order to exemplify the character’s reluctance and inability to move forward. James Joyce is known for his juxtaposition of light and dark throughout his short stories, specifically in his story.
Eveline, a nineteen-year-old woman in Dublin, is sitting with her head against the curtains, watching dusk fall on her street.She notices that it smells like “ dusty cretonne” (heavy fabric used for upholstery) and that she is tired. There is hardly anyone outside, but she notices a man who lives in the last house walking home. She hears his footsteps change from the concrete to the cinder.
Eveline chooses the certainty of the familiar, for all its faults over the unknown. This type of narration adds to the static quality of the story and the trancelike lives the Dublin people live. As this lifestyle continues, the people cease to be people; they are not even names as evidenced by the failure to name Eveline’s two youngest siblings.
