Editor’s Note: The French novelist Marcel Proust was born in 1871, and died in 1922. He is best known for his seven-volume work, Remembrance of Things Past, a novel that draws heavily on the author's own life and experiences. Throughout his life, Proust was chronically ill, suffering from asthma.
He returned to France in 1946 and published a number of biographies over the ensuing years. In 1947, he legally changed his name to his pseudonym. Maurois was a prolific writer and produced dramas, short stories, essays and juvenile works in addition to his many novels and biographies.

Swann's Way is Marcel Proust's literary masterpiece and the first part of the multivolume audiobook Remembrance of Things Past. In the opening volume, the narrator travels back in time to recall his childhood and to introduce the listener to Charles Swann, a wealthy friend of the family and celebrity in the Parisian social scene.

Maurois went on to write more biographies that garnered greater critical acclaim than Ariel, including one of Proust (which was among the first published by Penguin’s now defunct imprint, Peregrine). He also wrote biographies of Disraeli, Byron, George Sand, Victor Hugo, among others; many of these titles are still in print today.
